Blog Post Reflection: Creating My Sports Magazine Cover
Learning Magazine Conventions
While creating my magazine cover, I learned essential conventions that made my cover visually appealing and come to life. To make it easy to navigate through, I had to include: a clear and bold masthead, a central cover image, feature article coverlids, additional coverlids, banners/strips, puffs, a barcode, and a dateline. The importance of textual ranking and using a thoughtful color scheme is crucial to creating cohesion for the reader to enjoy the magazine cover.
Genre Choice and How the Cover Conveys It
I chose to create a sports magazine based on football. I used a clear portrait of a football coach to deliver the genre to the cover. The Masthead "Bobcat Gazette" creates a bold and confident title reflecting the athletic energy being portrayed. The Feature coverline "Inside the Mind of a Game Changer" highlights a major issue about the strategy of coaching.
Magazine Conventions Used and Their Effectiveness
I incorporated several key conventions:
Masthead: “Bobcat Gazette” is positioned at the top in large, bold letters to immediately capture the viewer's attention.
Cover Image: A central image of the football coach to clearly communicate the magazine’s theme.
Feature Coverline: “Inside the Mind of a Game Changer” is placed near the coach, using a larger text, to stand out.
Banner/Strip: Highlighting “Special Issue” to add context and draw interest.
Puff/Plug: I used a small graphic element to add effect but still maintain the focus of the magazine.
Barcode & Dateline: Bar code positioned at the bottom corner to add realism, and dateline at the top.
Using these conventions makes the cover professional, clear, and visually appealing.
Challenges and Successes
A challenge I faced was choosing fonts that still stand out but don't take away from the image. Another challenge was arranging multiple coverlines without making it look cluttered. My biggest success was creating clear imagery, making the masthead the most eye-catching element. I feel this effectively communicated the magazine’s message and theme.
Important Takeaways and Next Steps
I learned that planning your entire cover beforehand will save you plenty of time, and figuring out your fonts and colors is vital to a quicker success. Moving forward, I want to experiment with layering images, using different fonts, and trying new styles to enhance my designs. This experience will be beneficial for my final project, as it will demonstrate my ability to create professional, genre-specific magazine covers.
