Research- Target Audience, Table of contents, Quotes

 Table of Contents

A table of contents for a sports or fitness magazine specifically serves as a guide to the issue. It combines structure and aesthetic elements to grab the reader's attention. Feature articles, regular columns, and visuals related to health, sports, or gym routines are highlighted. The Memphis health fitness magazine contents include "fit news, nutrition tips, wellness insights, featured trainer of the month, and so much more!"

Target Audience

The target audience refers to the specific group of consumers most likely to indulge in a product or service. Sports/Fitness magazines are primarily for men aged 18-49 who are dedicated to fitness, nutrition, and health training. The 18-24 (Gen Z) range is interested in gym culture, wearable tech, and lifestyle. Gen Z top reasons for working out are ruled out to be "be fitter, get healthy, feel better, and reduce stress."

Research - Light, Mis-en-scene, color scheme

Sports/Fitness shots

The first step to creating a sports/fitness magazine cover is finding a model. The models typically have a lean build and go to the gym regularly. Most models only model for one type of sport or activity. Realistically, the looks alone of a model are important, but celebrities on a cover or in a magazine are driving the sales. Concerning clothing, in this field, solid colors work better than loud patterns or flashy designs. The imagery shouldn't have too many props; it should be simple and direct. When shooting a woman with bouncy and thick hair, some photographers use a light wind from a fan to add effect.

Lighting

The fitness cover expresses personality and looks. This is done with clamshell lighting. Clamshell lighting gets its name from the way the light sources are placed, with one light above and in front of the subject, with a second light or reflector in front of and below the subject. The resulting shape of the setup resembles an open clam but with a gap between the two shell halves. The top strobe is typically brighter, and a soft shadow is on the model's nose and jawline to create a natural look. The depth produces realism. Another way photographers show personality is through the positioning of the model. Turning the model sideways highlights the stomach definition, which fits perfectly in the sports/fitness genre.

Mise en scene

The mise-en-scene of a fitness magazine all uses similar elements to reinforce the themes.
The setting of average fitness magazines includes a blank color background or a gym/workout space. These also include props such as weights, medicine balls, chalk, etc. For example, Muscle & Fitness magazine incorporates dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, and yoga mats throughout its imagery. These elements clearly emphasize the themes: strength and discipline. The uncluttered background is vital for success as well as fitted athletic wear. The body language and expression of the athletes or models are crucial to produce the right look. They are usually shot mid-workout, lifting weights, sprinting, or even stretching. Occasional bold accent colors are used for the energetic tone of an active lifestyle. This technique is also used by Muscle & Fitness.

Research - Codes & Conventions

Magazine Codes & Conventions

Magazine codes are used as visuals and text on covers and inside pages. These techniques become associated with specific texts that are constantly used. The designs follow specific visual and textual conventions to capture the audience, such as masthead style, imagery, color, and layouts. The front covers consist of high-quality images and convincing coverlines to communicate the magazine's theme. This shows how visuals, text, and layouts communicate the magazine's ideas.

Sports Magazine Codes & Conventions
General magazine conventions and codes are applied in sports/fitness magazines. Vibrant mastheads, lively cover images representing sports and action, and performance-based text are all utilized. The main cover image features sports visuals that promote trending headlines.

Articles in magazines have standard conventions such as headings, subheadings, columns, a grid layout, engaging typography, and the visual element of colour.

The technical codes focus on design skills: grids, columns, and magazine design.
The written codes are the language and headlines; the effect of verbs, numbers, and motivational language is used.

Researching - Sub-Genres

Genre Research

For this section of my research, I concentrated on a sub-genre of magazines. After reviewing various genres, sports and fitness caught my eye the most. Within this genre, I chose to focus on nutrition and training as my sub-genre. The cause of my research is to gain a better understanding of the conventions, design elements, and strategies these magazines apply to engage their audience and effectively communicate fitness and wellness.

To begin with, in my analysis process, I mainly focused on 2 main references: Oxygen Magazine and Muscle & Fitness. While fully exploring the two magazines, I looked into their cover design, color schemes, layout, and article themes to know how nutrition and training magazines spread fitness goals, training, and healthy lifestyles.

Additionally, these 2 magazines fall under the same sub-genre, so it was clear that they contain similar conventions. A major thing that continuously caught my eye was the use of bold and energetic color palettes, such as reds, blues, orange, and black. These colors create energy, strength, and motivation, which go with the objective of sports performance, fitness, and an active, healthy lifestyle.

Text / Layout Conventions

The text across both exemplars is bold, clear, and easy to read. The mastheads use strong fonts to show confidence and strength. In regard to headlines, they are large enough to catch the eye immediately with well-structured body text, making the magazine organized and not cluttered. The information that's presented shows the reader a quick knowledge of workouts, nutrition, and training advice.

Cover Image Conventions

Typically, the cover features a main, high-quality image. The image is often aligned in the center of the page, consisting of a fit athlete in a strong pose. The images used communicate motivation, discipline, and strength to the readers. This is reflecting energy and the intensity of the nutrition and fitness sub-genre.

Article Themes

In my study, I realized that my sub-genre sticks to similar article themes and features in both magazines. Most articles have their focus on training routines, workout programs, nutrition advice, and personal fitness. These themes are utilized to educate readers and motivate them to achieve their fitness and sports goals.

This information shows that nutrition and training magazines heavily rely on bold visuals, energetic color palettes,  and motivational messages. With my own project, this knowledge will help me make sure my magazine brief fits perfectly within the sports fitness and nutrition training sub-genre.

Research - Genres

Greetings,

My media studies class is currently doing a magazine brief for our portfolio. I decided to focus on researching the three main genres: Fashion/Lifestyle, Music/Entertainment, and Sports & Fitness. Researching these genres helped me gain a better understanding of the conventions, different layout and design choices, and the audience expectations that bring together the magazine.

Genre #1 Fashion/Lifestyle

These are primarily targeted towards 18-35yr old women who are interested in keeping up with beauty, celebrity culture, and style trends. I noticed the glossy, high-quality photography, bold mastheads, coverlines to grab the audience's attention, and high contrast color schemes.

While observing these conventions, it helped me understand the visuals, layout, and lettering that make the magazine's personality. I learned that the visual and organized design keeps the magazine engaging, which I will keep in mind for my own magazine project.

Genre #2 Music/Entertainment

These magazines are aimed at 15-30-year-olds who have an interest in the latest music, new artists, concerts, and trends in pop culture. The NME is for readers who want to stay updated on new music releases and celebrity interviews.

Research helped me understand how, when combining current music

ea hel content with informal language and visuals engages a younger audience. This showed me that it's key to make your magazine feel lively and relatable while still organized.

Genre #3 Sports/Fitness

The sports and fitness genre is widely ranged from 16-20, 18-35, and even 30-45-year-olds. These magazines use high-contrast layouts, creating energy and action, bold lettering emphasizing headlines, and conventions suggesting motion and strength intensity.

I chose this genre as my genre for my magazine brief because it spoke to me the most, relating to athletes and the motivational language utilised. After reviewing these, I will carry the important conventions and high-impact photography onto my own.
