Production - feature article 1

For my first major feature article, "Core Strength," I aimed to design a layout that matches the intensity of a gym environment. Using Adobe InDesign, I designed a layout that is bold, masculine, and fitting for the "Performance" section of Buzzed.

The Masthead: I chose to use "CORE" in Arial Black, scaled to a massive size. This is a "brand anchor" that matches the masthead on the front cover. By using the color "Red," I’m utilizing color psychology to elicit a sense of energy, heart rate, and physical activity.

Secondary Header: I chose to place "STRENGTH" in a smaller font size directly underneath "CORE." This is a clear  Visual Hierarchy that lets the reader know exactly what the article is about.

The Red Bleed: Using the Line Tool, I designed a thick red line across the top of the page. I chose to let it "bleed" off the left edge of the page, a professional magazine design choice that creates a sense of expansiveness and modernity.

Action vs. Detail: The image on the left shows the athlete in action on the bike, while the image on the right shows a tight shot of the 20lb. weight. This is an example of "Wide vs. Tight" shots, which are an important part of editorial composition to show both the setting and the equipment.

Burst Mode: In taking the image of the bike, I employed the "Burst Mode" to make sure that the athlete’s form looks dynamic and in focus, without accidentally capturing motion blur that would give the magazine an amateurish look.

Layout Decisions in InDesign:
The Folio: I placed the "BUZZED MAGAZINE" and "12" at the very bottom. I made sure that these were perfectly center-justified through the "Align Panel," as I had done in the "Table of Contents" spread.
Background Color: I decided to change the harsh white background to a more muted "Cream/Off-White" color. This makes the "red" text "pop" more and gives the magazine a higher-end look.

Reflection:
I was able to effectively capture the "Grit and Glory" theme by combining the heavy typography with the high shutter speed photos. The layout looks dynamic and professional, fitting for a niche market such as fitness enthusiasts.
